Passion To Obsession :
Hi There,
I am Kamal Akula, hail from Andhra Pradesh, India. I have been living
in St Louis for 12 years.
I love watching movies like everybody else but that gradually developed into
an abiding passion.
In fact it's my friends who realized my obsession before I did.
But none of us had any contacts with the industry, did not know anybody,
not even a Light Boy.
Somehow thru a friend , we got in touch with a TV series producer.
That is when I started jotting down my ideas. Which were brought to life on TV.
Then after a while I realized TV would not take me anywhere.
I Started working on movie scripts and submitted them to a couple of producers.
But they never saw light, and you all know what will happen to those scripts.
I will not be surprised if I feel Deja vu while watching a movie somewhere
down the line.
I started as scriptwriter since I had no other option at that time, but
that was not my field of interest, I wanted to be a director.
Of course every, Tom, Dick or Harry wants to be a director.
Nothing wrong with that yen.
But, what experience I have?, ZIP. I have not even seen a movie being shot
in my life,
never saw a movie camera in my life, never met any big film personality,
do not know the ABC?s of filmmaking.
Once, I saw a director? s ad on the net, looking for an assistant.
When I contacted him, he asked me for my Resume, of course.
But my resume was pure like a Jasmine:-).
So..my career did not budge at all.
One day, I said to my self, why wait for someone to give me break, why cannot
I give it a shot?
Once I remember RGV saying, if you think you can make a movie and if you have
that zeal, just take the camera and start shooting. RGV, I like him..
what an arrogant dude..these days I like his arrogance more than his movies..
OK..let's start the movie..But before I start uttering "ACTION" , I should
at the least know about filmmaking process and the film lingo.
Leaving the job, family behind and going to NYFA was out of question,
so I joined a small community college for $250 bucks.
Which was two weeks(3 hours a day)worth of course work.
There I learnt the little bit of film lingo and the camera.
But, I learnt most of things from the INTERNET. Gosh, the internet is the best thing
that ever happened to our generation. Can't imagine the life without Google.
I used to exchange mails with indie filmmakers across the continents,
they really helped me start my first project.
I learned everything from INTERNET ONLY. Thanks to all those friends who helped me.
In fact, I was supposed to submit two short films to the school,
but I never submitted them , bad student.
Everybody in the class made 2,3 mins movies, but I made 20 mins movies with huge cast,
over ambitious:-).
Everybody was using Super 8MM camera, I was using 3CCD. Everybody was reading books,
I was browsing the Net. Everyone was trying to pass the course, I was trying to learn.
Half the way thru Curse Of The Lamb I figured that it is hard to get all actors
together at the same time, same place.Had to compromise with the shots and takes.
Had tough time getting the permission to shoot in the office, kinda disappointed.,
but finished it eventually though I wasn't happy with the technical values in that.
I was really careful for my second project, Stranger in The House,
had a small cast, limited locations. Finished it in 8 hours.
So, finished both he movies, and people really liked them.I was really happy..
NOW WHAT?? WHERE WILL THIS TAKE ME?? WHERE DO I END UP??
No Idea!!
Just I wanted to show my work to the whole world, get some suggestions,
that?s when fawlproductions.com came to life. This is just the beginning,
some day I will direct a movie for sure, but don't know when.
My friends are really encouraging me to go back to India and give it a shot..
BUT..with family two kids..jobs,..
don't know , so many responsibilities..sometimes I feel it is too late..
Well..you never know...things might swing in my way..
and do not be surprised if you see "A KAMAL AKULA'S FILM" in the opening credits:-).
Later
